Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali Jayatunga yesterday imposed a suspended sentence of six months’ imprisonment for a period of five years on a man who pleaded guilty to operating a YouTube channel that featured obscene stories alongside downloaded images of attractive women. Dimuthu Chamara, also known as “Topiya,” who was a suspect in a case filed by the Computer Crimes Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The case was initiated following a complaint made by a schoolteacher in the Colombo area. The teacher alleged that her photograph had been featured on a YouTube channel that broadcast sexually explicit stories.
When the case was taken up yesterday, the complainant teacher appeared before court.
The counsel appearing on behalf of the suspect informed the court that he was prepared to plead guilty to the charges and had already discontinued the obscene broadcasts. He requested that a rehabilitative punishment be imposed, allowing his client to reintegrate into society.
The Magistrate inquired whether the complainant expected any compensation from the suspect. The teacher responded that she was not seeking compensation.
After considering the facts, including the suspect’s early admission of guilt and his decision to halt the obscene content, the Chief Magistrate imposed a suspended sentence of six months’ imprisonment for five years, along with a fine of Rs. 2,500.
