State Minister of Tourism Diana Gamage voiced her concerns regarding the current usage of the term ‘spa,’ in the wellness industry suggesting that it fails to accurately represent the high standards and respect associated with wellness centres.

Tourism State Minister Diana Gamage advocated for a reevaluation of the naming conventions within the wellness industry.

“Using the name ‘spa’ inappropriately undermines the professionalism of individuals working in this sector,” Minister Gamage said.

“It’s crucial that we choose names that reflect the true essence of these establishments and maintain the integrity of the industry.”

Highlighting the negative perceptions often associated with the term ‘spa,’ particularly towards female masseurs, Minister Gamage underscored the importance of addressing these misconceptions. “It’s unfortunate that the term ‘spa’ can sometimes carry negative connotations, leading to unfair judgement of individuals in the wellness profession,” she said. “We must work towards fostering a more respectful attitude towards these dedicated practitioners.”

Shifting the focus to the issue of prostitution, Minister Gamage expressed her opposition to the association of late-night bars with such activities. While acknowledging the persistence of prostitution, she called for a realistic approach to addressing the issue. “Prostitution is a complex issue that requires open dialogue and pragmatic solutions,” Minister Gamage asserted. “We cannot ignore its existence, but we must work together to find constructive ways to address it.”

The Minister’s statements have sparked discussions within the tourism sector, with many stakeholders welcoming her call for reevaluation and constructive dialogue on these pressing issues. As efforts continue to reshape the industry and address societal challenges, Minister Gamage remains committed to promoting professionalism, dignity, and respect within the tourism and wellness sectors.
