The newly established sperm bank at the Castle Street Hospital for Women in Colombo has received an adequate supply of sperm donations to meet current demand and therefore, prospective donors are requested to be patient until further notice, hospital authorities said.
Hospital Director Dr. Ajith Kumara Danthanarayana told the Daily Mirror that the facility has already received sufficient donations and will call for additional donors only if and when the need arises.
“We have received adequate donations for the existing demand.
Those who wish to donate are kindly requested to wait until the authorities make a further request,” Dr. Danthanarayana said.
Meanwhile, the sperm bank has recorded encouraging early results with ten women successfully conceiving through its services since its launch.
Dr. Danthanarayana described the initiative as a major breakthrough in addressing infertility among Sri Lankan couples and individuals.
“The sperm bank, which was launched recently, has already registered over 150 men as sperm donors. So far, ten women have conceived, and over 200 others are currently receiving support through this programme,” he said.
He explained that the primary objective of the facility is to provide new hope for those struggling with infertility while maintaining strict medical and ethical standards.
