Deaths caused by road accidents have reduced remarkably  during the last few weeks due to the actions taken by the police, Police  Spokesman Buddhika Manatunga said yesterday.

He told a special press briefing at the Government  Information Department that an average of eight deaths were reported  daily in Sri Lanka and that it has reduced to four deaths during the  last few days.

The Police Spokesman said on some days, deaths caused by road accidents dropped even to two a day.

He said police took action to make the people aware of road  rules and took some action within the prevailing legal framework and  added that the moves had resulted in the reduction of road accidents.

The Spokesman also said that no fatal accident was reported on Christmas Day after some ten years.

He said only four to five deaths were reported even during  the war time whereas an average of nine deaths were reported due to road  accidents now.

“It is a social disaster and an invisible terrorism. The  country also has to bear massive costs due to people’s failure to adhere  to road rules,” he said.
