The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has instructed all Senior DIGs and DIGs to take necessary measures to maintain law and order and ensure a peaceful environment during the upcoming festive season, with special focus on religious sites.
Police Spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler said officers-in-charge have been directed to engage with religious leaders in their respective areas to strengthen security arrangements at places of worship.
He said special attention will be given to ensuring security in major cities where large crowds are expected for shopping, as well as at religious places where the public is expected to gather in large numbers.
“Members of public security councils, as well as trustee boards of religious institutions, have come forward to assist the Sri Lanka Police and the tri-forces in ensuring the safety and security of devotees. I urged the public to report any suspicious vehicles, individuals, or belongings to the nearest police station or police officer immediately,” the spokesman said.
In particular, an additional 2,500 police officers will be deployed across the Western Province to enhance security during the festive period.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant, especially when parking vehicles along roadsides, and to take precautions to secure their belongings.
Police said special mobile patrol units will also be deployed during nighttime hours to prevent crimes, including robberies and thefts.
