An expectant mother who developed labour pains on her way to hospital by boat had delivered the child onboard the ferry near Nagadeepa.
She had been first admitted to the Nagadeepa Base Hospital and on the advice of doctors had been transferred to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital by ferry.
The female passengers had sent all the men onto the upper deck and helped her to deliver the child. She, with the child was ferried to Kurikadduwan jetty and transported from there to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.
Doctors said the mother and the infant were getting on well.
