Inclement weather causes havoc again

Adverse weather conditions brought on by the Northeast Monsoon rains prompted the governor of Eastern province to close schools in the province. 

The closure of schools in the province came after Disaster Management Centre (DMC) yesterday warned of flash floods once again during the coming days as rains exceeding 150mm are expected in some areas.   

“There is threat of floods in some areas in the Ampara, Batticaloa, Polonnaruwa, and Anuradhapura Districts within the coming days,” DMC Director Pradeep Kodippili said.   

Director Irrigation L. S. Sooriarachchi who confirmed the situation warned of flood situations in low lying areas around Mundeni Aru situated in Maha Oya, Eravurpattu and Koralaipattu DS divisions. Residents and motorists were requested to take adequate precautions in these regards.  

A flood situation is expected in low lying areas around the Mahaweli River situated in Dimbulagala, Echchilampattai, Hingurakgoda, Kantalai, Kinniya, Koralai Pattu North, Lankapura, Medirigiriya, Muttur, Seruvila, Thamankaduwa, Thampalakamam and Welikanda D/S Divisions.
