A police sergeant has been suspended over alleged inappropriate conduct involving Takshi Nandakumara, a suspect currently being held on a 90-day detention order in connection with the killing of organised criminal Ganemulla Sanjeewa inside the Hulftsdorp court complex.
Police said the sergeant is accused of maintaining close contact with the suspect, including sharing a biscuit and communicating through hand signals while on duty.
Ganemulla Sanjeewa was shot dead inside the Hulftsdorp court complex on February 19.
Following the shooting, the main suspect, Ishara Sewwandi, went into hiding. She was later arrested along with Takshi Nandakumara and several other suspects at a house in Kathmandu, Nepal. The suspects were subsequently brought back to Sri Lanka.
Ishara Sewwandi and Takshi Nandakumara are currently being detained at the Colombo Crimes Division under 90-day detention orders.
Police said the suspended sergeant had allegedly offered biscuits to Takshi while on duty, who was being held in cell No. 03, and accepted a partially eaten biscuit in return.
CCTV footage has reportedly shown the suspect moving closer to the cell and communicating with the officer through hand signals on several occasions.
The Colombo Crimes Division is conducting further investigations into the incident.
