Flight attendant goes to court

against popular cricketer Chamika Karunaratne over broken promise to marry

  • Claims she had a relationship with the cricketer with the expectation of marriage

A flight attendant has filed a case against   well known Sri Lankan cricketer Chamika Karunaratne, requesting that he either marry her or be ordered to pay maintenance for their child.

Colombo Additional Magistrate Kasun Kanchana Dissanayake yesterday fixed the matter for December 8.

In her complaint, the woman has informed court that she maintained a relationship with the cricketer with the expectation of marriage and that as a result of this relationship she has a child belonging to him. She further states that although the cricketer promised to marry her, he failed to do so and subsequently abandoned both her and the child.

Accordingly, the complainant has sought an order directing the suspect to pay maintenance for the child if he does not marry her.

The suspect, who is cited in the complaint, was not present in court.

His counsel informed court that the suspect was unable to appear as he was unwell, and assured that he would be present at the next court date.

After considering the submissions made on behalf of both the complainant and the suspect, the Additional Magistrate fixed the case to be called again on December 8.
