Experts sound alarm on post-cyclone stress

In the wake of the natural calamity that brought the livelihoods of many to a standstill, the Sri Lanka College of Psychiatrists has issued a public advisory outlining key mental health measures for communities recovering from the devastation.

The College noted that emotional reactions such as fear, sadness, confusion, and stress are common following a major disaster. It urged the public to pay attention to their mental well-being as recovery efforts continue nationwide.

The advisory includes practical steps to help individuals cope with the aftermath:

Start with manageable tasks: Engaging in simple activities like tidying up, organising documents, checking on relatives, and assisting neighbours can help rebuild a sense of stability.

Stay connected: Special attention should be given to pregnant women, children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and those with chronic illnesses or mental health conditions.

Support children: Maintain daily routines and explain the situation in age-appropriate, reassuring language.

Turn to cultural and spiritual practices: Meditation, prayer, and traditional rituals may provide comfort when used safely.

Continue prescribed medications: Anyone in need of assistance should contact the nearest medical officer.

Limit exposure to distressing content: Follow only verified updates and avoid consuming excessive disaster-related news.

Avoid misinformation: Refrain from sharing unverified claims or graphic images. Do not turn to alcohol or drugs: These can worsen emotional distress. Act responsibly: The College urged the public not to misuse or exploit the crisis.

The statement further emphasised that difficulties with sleep, concentration, or emotional control are normal after traumatic events.

Those experiencing persistent distress are encouraged to seek support through the 24/7 National Mental Health Helpline on 1926 or visit the nearest hospital for professional assistance.
