Amid uncertainties over the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ project which has received both positive and negative feedback, a Deputy Minister clarified that the project is slated to be implemented on February 01.
Speaking to Daily Mirror, Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena said, “The month of January is the period during which we raise awareness and get feedback about the project.”
“The project is not only confined to keeping the environment clean or removing unnecessary items on buses and three-wheelers. It is a much broader one, which is set to address a spate of issues in the society in general,” he pointed out.
“Under the project, we have also planned to establish district councils to cater to the issues of the respective areas, he stated. However, Dr Gunasena said some attempt to confine the project to a cleaning project whereas it aims to create a cleaner environment and inspire people across the country to follow strong moral values. “This project focuses on promoting a culture of cleanliness and care for the environment. It encourages people to change their behaviour (in how they think, feel, and act) and work to improve systems that support responsibility, good ethics and strong values to build a better society,” Gunasena added. The project was ceremonially inaugurated on January 01 under the aegis of Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
