A survey carried out by National Building and Research Organization has revealed that 66 percent of the land area of Badulla district was facing some kind of danger. District Geologist Harshani Perera told a meeting chaired by Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Facilities Samantha Vidyaratne at the District Secretariat that Sri Lanka was facing a climatic change rendering it a high risk country and that the Badulla district was having a fair share of it.
She pointed out that 66 percent of the land area was endangered with landslides, intense soil erosion, dearth of drinking water, spread of pests, running dry of Baduluoya river and ruin of infrastructure facilities.
The official said this would result in massive destruction of life and property unless preventive measures were not taken. She stressed the need to prevent the human activities that caused environmental pollution, bush fires and setting fire to forests.
District Secretary Panduka Sri Prabhat Abeywardena said it was imperative that all those concerned join hands and work out an effective mechanism with concerted effort to overcome the impending dangers.
