Cleantech (Pvt) Ltd last week introduced two very common yet very effective products, The Spade and The Lady Bin which were manufactured using 100 percent locally recycled plastic. This represents an ambitious move on the way forward, towards the circular economy, a cleaner and greener tomorrow in Sri Lanka.

Introduced at a special launch, these products do not only offer a practical way to reduce the environmental impact but also represent a closed-loop approach to one of the most urgent environmental issues in Sri Lanka’s plastic waste. The Spade (a cleaning tool set) and the Lady Bin (a sanitary bin) are the two products made of complete plastic waste which is collected and processed in Sri Lanka.

“This is not just a bin, this is not just a spade, this shows that waste can be re-imagined to be value,” stated Cleantech, Assistant General Manager Kasun Thennakoon. “We have decided to recycle locally instead of relying on imports, to create demand in used plastic and make it a self-sustainable system.”

“Cleantech reprocesses over 60 to more than 700 metric tons of plastic annually since 2009 and operates with a zero-waste to landfill charge. The high-tech recycling plant now converts the plastics into pellets used in the production process, which cuts dependence on virgin plastic and imported materials. It aims at harmonizing collectors, recyclers and end-users with a self-sufficient and practical market solution, that places priority on the long-term scalability and feasibility,” he said.

By adding The Spade and Lady Bin to their product line, Cleantech puts a very convincing statement, “Plastic pollution solutions can start as close to home as it gets”. Not only are these innovations both functional and environmentally-friendly, but they also simply remind the world how an economy that works like a circle can feel.

The company added that it wants to reach all corporates, government sectors and the public in this call. ‘

“We also need to drive the demand of recycled products and assume shared responsibility of plastic pollution together.”
