Two businessmen were arrested this morning by the officers of the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) while attempting to smuggle a stock of jewellery worth Rs. 28 million at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
They were arrested at the airport's arrival lounge.
The two businessmen, aged 44 and living in the Wellampitiya area of Colombo, were reported as frequent visitors to the country. They sell goods in the local market after bringing them into the country.
The two suspects had arrived at the BIA at 2.20 a.m. today from Chennai, India, on Indian Airlines flight AI-273.
The PNB officers found this stock of jewellery, weighing 01 kg and 780 grams, packed in their luggage.
The suspects and the stock of jewellery have been handed over to the Katunayake Airport Customs officials for further investigations.
