A row erupted in Parliament between members of the government and the opposition over the non-payment of the basic salary of state employees who are contesting the Local Government elections.
Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa questioned the government’s hesitance in not only holding the Local Government polls but also in paying candidates’ salaries.
"Is it fair to stop their salaries, just because you don't have a backbone?" he questioned.
