Cartoon of the Day 29-08-2025: When “Security” Becomes a Wall Against Transparency

The cartoon captures a fundamental tension between democracy and control. On one side of the trench stands a citizen, labeled with Right to, and on the other lies Information—the very thing that right is meant to guarantee. But in between rises a wall, freshly dug, stamped with the phrase Security Sensitive Information. Smiling nearby, a political figure holds the spade, satisfied with the barrier he has erected.

The symbolism is stark. The cartoon suggests that the promise of the Right to Information is being deliberately undermined. While citizens are told they have the right to know, that right collapses at the edge of “security concerns.” The trench is not natural; it is constructed—built by those in power to keep the public from accessing truths that might hold leaders accountable.

What makes the cartoon biting is the selective use of “security.” In genuine contexts, national security is vital. But here it is depicted as a blanket excuse—a convenient catch-all phrase to justify secrecy. By placing almost everything under the label of “security sensitive,” governments transform transparency from a constitutional right into an empty slogan.

The citizen, leaning anxiously over the edge, represents society’s frustration: the information exists, but it remains just out of reach. Meanwhile, the leader with the spade reveals the cynical hand of politics—the gatekeeping is intentional, strategic, and self-serving.

The larger insight is chilling: when security becomes a shield for secrecy, democracy becomes a façade. A right denied in practice is no right at all. And until the trench is filled, the promise of transparency will remain on paper, while the truth stays buried in the soil of political convenience.
