It must be a really aloof or a RW hack cartoon artist sketching these. How else without taxes is supposed to pay for all the services the people receive. Do you think that it is from their ancestral inheritance? On one hand you criticize Marxism and Democracy with the other. You must be on drugs, perhaps? Where were you when RW started this? and the previous MR regimes??

Just to give the correct picture, withholding tax is said to be applicable if one has close to 23,000,000 in a fixed deposit. Yes, twenty three million LKR.
And that also could be contested....
Cartoon mis represent it as a plight for a common man...
GIhan Chikera is a paid employee of RW news paper...and I wish him a little more brain...

Mathematically you are correct Chaminda. But as at now somebody with 50,000 fixed deposit to earn 10% WHT relief he has to prove his yearly taxable income is not more than 1,800,000.00. Current procedure requires him to go to IRD, fill the form/s disclosing not only the income but assets etc with evidence. This is the hassle the innocent people have to undergo. If it happens after April 2025 with already deducted 10% WHT, that person will be lucky if he gets a refund from the IRD before ONE year from the date of deduction, for which many more filled forms and evidence he has to submit
