@ perera and aja. I agree with your comments. But, this is part of culture of SL that you can not find anywhere in the world. Best thing would, the "profit" they make from these pandols, should go to charities and poor.

If this was not done how many people spend that money on Charity? Hardly any. No matter what you do there will be critics. There is an advantage of this that we must not forget. At least once a year this reminds us especially the kids part of Buddhism which will be remembered long after. You cannot put a value to that. This also provides income for people who works for months on these otherwise they have no income as this is a specialist area.

The spiritual wealth of these Pandals should never be underestimated. Through the celebration of Buddhism be it Vesak or the Pera hare festival Sri Lanka keeps brings to life in the most extraordinary way the culture of Buddhism. Without them Buddhism would be drab. This goes for all faiths for without the pomp and glory the faith is left without the joy one experiences. Same can be said of Christmas or Diwali.

So beautiful. Cannot understand why some people complaint about this. If we cannot celebrate Lord Buddha's birth
in Sri Lanka like this, which is a tradition, we might as well stop all sorts of celebrations.
