Mr Ranil Wickramasinghe (not RW as the President) must take total responsibility and ownership for the absolute leadership disaster which has ruined the grand old party! Even at 73 years no succession plan to have a deputy shadowing him. He couldn't keep Sajith within the party and neither did he groom Ruwan W or anyone else for that matter. This should be studied as a case study in all universities offering Management as a subject of WHAT NOT TO DO as a leader. Another lesson to learn is intelligence which contributes at a conceptual level to create a vision should be supported with a high energy feet on the ground team of DOERs to execute plans that will achieve the vision. In the absence of such a team the leader will create a political culture of manipulation and deceit for his own survival at the expense of the growth of the entity (in this case the UNP). Colombo elite's like Mr Ronald P as National organiser may not be the most appealing to win a majority. A strategic blunder

If RW is serious about been an independent presidential candidate these type of publicity will only confuse people or create suspicion. RW as a brand was once known as Mr Clean and now he is known as maha banku hora! UNP s Number two Ravi K is a dustbin figure in the eyes of the public. RW should make a public announcement and hand over the campaign leadership from the UNP to another senior person like Ruwan Wijewardane and make himself truly NirPaakshika. His loyalty to Rajapakses and his ridiculing of Sajith will not help him win 1st or 2nd slot in the race round one. Best will be 3rd. UNP must understand the intellectual level of the middle class (their vote base during RP era) in now more politically savy.

The fact that the UNP is even running in this election again is almost a surprise!!! Because it will no longer play a political role in this election and if you analyse the faces of the men immediately surrounding Ranil, they all express hopelessness, almost depression!!! There is no sign of a spirit of optimism towards a victorious election!!! Ranil can no longer be saved, he cannot lead the country into a really better future because he has not found any solutions to the fundamental, systemic problems such as corruption, unfair governance and also the ethnic question!!! In addition to this, there is a massively advanced emotional rejection of him as an active politician whose political machinations have been known for decades and have often enough been seen through as deceptions and dirty tricks!!!
