Sri Lanka hosts Independence Day reception in South Africa



The Sri Lanka High Commission in South Africa hosted a special reception to celebrate Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Day at Sri Lanka House on February 5.

This landmark event, held for the first time in five years, brought together a group of diplomats, Sri Lankans residing in South Africa and other accredited countries, and government officials, including senior representatives from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa.

Guests were treated to authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, reflecting the country’s rich culinary heritage. The event was organized with the strong support of the Sri Lankan community.

A special highlight of the evening was the entrance lottery, during which gifts symbolizing Sri Lankan identity were distributed. These included brass oil lamps, silver plates depicting the Sandakada Pahana, traditional masks, wood carvings of the Perahera, and other cultural artifacts showcasing Sri Lanka’s heritage. The Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, High Commissioner Omar, presented the grand prize to the winner.

Addressing the gathering, the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, Air Chief Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa (Retd.), highlighted the national vision of “Rebuild Sri Lanka,” emphasizing unity, resilience, and international engagement.

The reception also provided an opportunity for Sri Lankan businesspersons to broaden their horizons through international engagement, fostering connections that support trade, investment, and cooperation.
