A team of Special Task Force (STF) officers, lauded for their bravery in rescuing two children held hostage by their father in Jalthara, Hanwella, were honored with cash prizes in recognition of their exemplary service.

Public Security Minister Tiran Alles presided over the ceremony held at the ministry today. Among the attendees were IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, STF Commandant Waruna Jayasundara and DIG Ranmal Kodithuwakku. The event also saw the presence of DIG M.KB.S.N. Gunaratne, SP Dimuthu Samaranayake and seven other STF personnel who were awarded with Rs. 750,000 in cash along with certificates of appreciation from the IGP.

Last week, two children who were taken hostage by a father in Jalthara, Hanwella were rescued by the STF after a nine-hour operation. The suspect had come with a hand grenade to kill his wife who was living at the Government Servant's Housing Complex in Jalthara last evening and took the children hostage. The STF managed to arrest the suspect with a great effort.

I have been living in Britain and I can say categorically based on so many cases over here, if this has happened in Britain then the Police would have definitely shot and killed the father. Congratulations to our own STF boys, we are proud of your professionalism.

Such nonsense! How many suspects get killed in raids in Sri Lanka? Almost every day.

You may have saved lots of tax payer pounds. Both arguments have merits. If you are too soft you encourage others to go down the same path expecting a soft response. If you are too hard you kill someone who may have made a terrible mistake but you send a response that such behaviour will not be tolerated. Which path do you choose?

I have been living in Britain for last 20 years and I can say categorically based on so many cases over here, Great Britain police is one of best police forces in the world. I dont think British police would have shot for mere hostage drama. They are not barbarian like STF. It happened Hanwella. If was in minority dominated area( Tamil area) , STF would have shot and killed.

No doubt the STF did a good job. In the past they have done more difficult jobs. I wonder if the recognition with cash and certificate presented is due to the election being round the corner.

Police reward fund has lots of money that can be used for bravery. For a long time we have not seen bravery recognised. Good to recognise bravery but bad timing as elections are due soon
