The University Trade Union Joint Committee (UTUJC) staged a protest in front of the Visual and Performing Arts University today, demanding that the authorities solve their salary anomalies and take immediate action to enroll new lecturers to continue with the students' academic activities. This is incredible. Everyone is asking for salary increases and promotions. Isn't this a joke? How can a bankrupt country afford these hundreds of salary increases from numerous public servants alomost everyday? Where is the money coming from? This country will never be out of bankruptcy.

Also imagine the impact on productivity as the number of manhours lost by the various trade unions and bodies, repeatedly protesting and rallying. Protests and rallies have become business as usual in SL. One thing is clearly evident; at this rate this country will never ever improve.

The floodgates were opened wide by none other than the Central Bank.

Outside justifying the demand for increases in salaries, one must not forget that the govt of SL had no plan to upgrade the economy. The import of fuel at 30% of the imports hangs as a heavy weight on our economy. This can be brought down to near 5% if the Govts ( all three major parties) were interested. If China can do it why not SL

They can ask their NPP government next year. But my guess is that NPP will cut the salaries

True. This is why anyone with money or overseas job opportunities should leave this place as soon as possible. Nextwave of struggling for people and shortages will be worse than the previous one.

How about first getting off the streets and into the classroom and doing some work for a change?

If we give what ever 107% they want, that alone would destroy our university education. Do these humanities chaps know 107% would more than double what they have now ?

Unfortunately all the loss making govt business entities (CEB/Srilankan/CGR/CPC)and Non profit making entities (free education/ free hospitals) protest, strike and get increments whilst staff of profit making entities and $ earning entities suffer with no or very little increments- come any government or president, elected or unelected- Sri Lanka shall remain a ‘developing’ , ‘third world’ country!

Those who studied at the University have already left the country and gone for good, do we still need to maintain universities for those who never complete their degrees and stay on for protests and engage in ragging activities.

The state of our government funded and administered education system is pathetic. Our children in the government funded education system have no future, they end up in the government funded universities and from Day One are on the streets demanding and protesting against various issues. They are being water cannoned and tear gassed sometimes even baton charged when the protests get too violent. On the other hand, children who study in private schools with their own funding go about their studies without any issues. They enter private universities here in Sri Lanka and concentrate on their studies and future. They learn in the English medium of study, master the language and pass out with diverse International degrees and walk into plumb white collar jobs in Sri Lanka and abroad, drawing high remunerations. Those without an English education are being exploited in various countries or end up in menial employment, or worst, end up as housemaids who are just glorified slaves.
