VERY IMPRESSED BY THIS GUYS WORK OF ART. THE GOVT SHOULD SEE A WAY TO SHOWCASE WORKS OF ART AND CRAFT OF GOODS MADE IN VILLAGES AND REMOTE AREAS. I KNOW LAKSALA HAS QUITE A VARIETY OF ARTS AND CRAFT, BUT A SHOW CASE OF OPPORTUNITY GIVEN BY SUCH ARTISTS SO THAT HOTELS AND GUEST HOUSES CAN HAVE A SECTION WHERE THESE ITEMS ARE FOR SALE (USED TO HAVE SOME SUCH OPPORTUNITIES, NOT AURE IF THEY STILL EXIST. WE KNOW THAT THESE SALES AND BEAD WORK TAKES PLACE ALONG THE BEACH FROM NEGOMBO UPTO TOWARDS MATARA .

A woman in Galle Fort, opposite the Isle of Gelato, was filmed asking some locals not to enter her craft shop, insisting it is exclusively for foreigners, essentially telling them to “get out.” The video has since gone viral on social media. Over to authorities!

If you go past the southern coastal highway, especially in ambalangoda, you will find a lot of these demon masks and handicrafts. I have seen what artisans can do since I am from the south. Hand chiseled wood carvings with complex designs, more beautiful than the painted demon masks that are promoted and you see everywhere. There is untapped talent and very few want to take the time and chance to create new things since they only want to make what sells by default. Hence, what has been promoted for decades never changes. Same old masks, batik designs of perehara, woven hambiliyas and wooden elephants. After buying all of this there is nothing else tourists want to buy. Sri Lankan crafts lack variety. Look at India. What an astounding array of crafts they have on everything from bangles to bowls.
