Ex-His Excellency J. R. Jayawardene, who remained one of the greatest leaders of our time in the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, regrettably graced an occasion marred by the presence of mean-spirited and corrupt individuals—except for a foreign delegate, whose presence reflected the respect truly deserved by His Excellency J. R. Jayawardene.

Unfortunately, he will not be remembered in that light. He was ahead of his time, full of bold ideas, and did much good for the country. If the constitution was truly flawed, or the open economy a mistake, why then did every government that followed choose to keep them?
Some of his decisions, however, created space for unscrupulous elements; within his own ranks as well as the opposition; to fuel unrest and set the country ablaze. His foreign policy, tilted heavily toward the West, did him no favours either, as he was ultimately abandoned at a crucial moment when the IAF carried out the 'Parrippu Drop' shortly after the Sri Lankan armed forces’ successful “Operation Liberation” in Vadamaarachchi.
He laid down a path that every government since has followed, yet his legacy is clouded by some unwise choices. Still, we have never again seen a leader of his calibre; someone who could truly be described as possessing the qualities of a real leader.

He made a devasted country - well managed and resourceful - in to a hell, full of corruption, thuggeries, no law and order etc. etc.
Ruined the local economy - the so called Statesman !
We still pay the price of his mis doings.
He should be punished posthumously, and erased from the history. His name should be taken away from all where it is appearing !

One of the leaders that Sri Lanka needs to forget. He brought a flawed constitution and which we are still suffering from. Expect the present government to bring a people centred constitution.

This guy was a power hungry charlatan and a fraud. Why commemorate him. He should be discarded into the dustbin of history

His stupid foreign policy bequeathed a 30 year long war for Srilanka which devastated the country of it’s future.

Destoy the legal system - hoot the judge who gave the correct decision in favour of Vivien G - such a nsty guy - why this black man came out suddenly out of a box!
