The 'City Pet Animal Hospital', Pelawatta branch, celebrated their third anniversary of compassionate care and dedication to pets under the theme 'Happy Life'. Several programms such as the rabies vaccination programme, the cats and dogs fashion show and live photo printing, were held to mark the event. Pix by Kithsiri de Mel

Making huskies live in a tropical climate is just cruelty. High tropical temperatures are very difficult for those dogs. And these people claim to be "animal lovers".

@A.C. Pereira: I agree with you 100%. And to add insult to injury, the majority of readers here spend all their energy bashing the white man etc etc. Who's the fool now?

Agree. I am owner of Husky and live in Australia. Even here in Summer they really find it hot and shed a lot. I would never think of raring them in Sri Lanka and subject them hot humid weather conditions.
2500 year culture rich don't care about the poor on show Monday, 29 April 2024 07:35 AM
@ A.C. Pereira The husky and other exotic dog owners are generally rich people who are out of touch or don't care about other or poorer human beings. The cake for the event shows out opulent it is amounts the rich here, who shower the dogs with 100 or 1000 times more than they would ever consider giving to destitute and hungry needy people.

IT IS NICE OF PEOPLE TREATING BAWWAS LIKE THIS, GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

@A.C. Pereira - It is sad to see pessimistic comments without giving a helping hand only talk ridiculing animal lovers. Whilst these huskies are not having their origins in tropical countries animal lovers are making every endeavour to make their lives as comfortable as possible so is it CRUELTY??? Practicing compassionateness to all beings has been part of our culture comments of this nature only shows the low level of degradation of some human beings who have lost human values!!!!!

Terrence K: that is the whole point, they are not animal lovers. They only keep them as a status symbol. Why choose a dog that is breed for cold weather conditions?
Chris Monday, 29 April 2024 04:04 PM
Why all the fuss about huskies. There are plenty of other breeds shown in the pictures. Need to give credit to those running the pet hospital. Blindly criticising seems to be a hobby amongst some Sri Lankans.
Jeanne Monday, 29 April 2024 04:27 PM
@Terrence K: The point that A.C Pereira is making is that, in tropical countries like Sri Lanka , these breeds are non-practical especially with constant unpredictable power-cuts, dreadfully humid weather and horrendous heatwaves like we are experiencing right now. Your argument about compassion and human degradation is utter rubbish and totally irrelevant. So-called "animal lovers" should know better. It is 100% animal CRUELTY. No ifs. No buts. Or butts.
Samoyeds - the smiling dog, Golden Retrievers - the studious dog Monday, 29 April 2024 05:26 PM
I used to own a Samoyed (living in NSW). I am told that these dogs have two fur coats. During summer these dogs lose their outer coat and their inner coat acts as insulation. I'm no Vet (nor a breeder) but can someone with expertise in this area confirm if this is the case. Now, I have a Golden Retriever and she has a slightly less fur coat than Samoyeds (Husky family). I have not observed any discomfort from the Retriever since our nights are cool during summer (except the exceptionally hot day).
