Colombo Nawam Maha Perahera takes flight with SriLankan Airlines

SriLankan Airlines, the national carrier of Sri Lanka, has unveiled a landmark international branding initiative to promote the Colombo Nawam Maha Perahera 2026, one of the country’s most distinguished religious and cultural festivals. The initiative features a specially designed livery on an Airbus A320neo, turning the aircraft into a flying ambassador of Sri Lanka’s living heritage.

Organised under the auspices of the Gangaramaya Temple, the Nawam Maha Perahera is internationally recognised for its historical significance, spiritual depth, and ceremonial grandeur. The concept for this global branding initiative was proposed by Venerable Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thero, who saw aviation as a powerful platform for cultural diplomacy.

The initiative was realised through the collective efforts of the Nawam Maha Perahera Committee, devotees, and institutional support from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Aviation, and SriLankan Airlines. The Gangaramaya Temple and the Perahera Committee fully funded the project, reflecting their commitment to promoting Sri Lanka’s religious and cultural heritage internationally.

SriLankan Airlines extended its support across all levels of the organisation, with special recognition for its Chairman, Board of Directors, senior management, engineering and technical teams, designers, operational staff, and frontline employees, whose expertise brought the cultural vision to life.

Recently, Venerable Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thero and members of the Nawam Maha Perahera Committee, accompanied by resident young monks from Gangaramaya Temple, visited the airline’s engineering and operations premises in Katunayake to observe the progress of the aircraft branding and offer blessings to the SriLankan Airlines team.

As the Airbus A320neo travels across international destinations, it carries with it the story of Gangaramaya Temple, the Nawam Maha Perahera, and Sri Lanka’s enduring cultural values, fostering global awareness and strengthening the country’s image as a destination of faith, heritage, and cultural pride.
