A media conference was held at the Colombo National Eye Hospital auditorium to raise public awareness about glaucoma, the leading cause of blindness after cataracts. The event took place under the patronage of the hospital's Director, Specialist Dr. A.R.M. Thowfik. Ophthalmologists delivered lectures on the causes of the disease, available treatments, and the roles of both doctors and the public in managing glaucoma. Don't be fooled by a well-known female eye consultant who misdiagnosed my wife with glaucoma and treated her for five years under this incorrect diagnosis. Eventually, we ourselves sought a second opinion from a Sri Lankan eye specialist based in Singapore, who confirmed that she did not have glaucoma. Since then, after stopping all strong medications for three years, medications that had caused the skin around her eyes to turn purple due to excessive use of eye drops, she is completely fine now and continues routine check-ups with an alternative consultant. Given this experience, I also suspect that my wife's mother was similarly misdiagnosed with glaucoma and underwent prolonged treatment for the condition, only to eventually pass away from old age.

It is not a very good idea to write such comment based on just one isolated experience. It is very important that people who exatually have glaucoma will visit a specialist and are not afraid to do so.

I know that the Doctors/consultants (not all) advise patients of worse situations and start treating. This will result in the patient visiting the Consultant once a fortnight or once a month fattning the pockets of consultants. We the patients must always get a second opinion

Sri Lankan eye doctors are in a class by themselves. Their misadventures need volumes to write. There is one who is supposedly technically competent retina specialist, but is one of the rudest and arrogant medical doctors of SL. He thinks that he is god. Certainly, he should not have been admitted to med school. I did my research as I need an intravitreal injection once in 8 weeks. I got so scared with what I found, I returned to Canada yesterday, cutting my holiday drastically, for care in Canada. There are confirmed accounts of many patients have lost their vision under these rude, arrogant, and incompetent eye surgeons. It is scary to let them even touch a patients' eyes. They all sit behind cash registers calling them ophthalmoscopes.
