TikTok, in collaboration with the Government of Sri Lanka, launched a new in-app destination, a specialized STEM Feed that provides young learners with reliable science, technology, engineering and mathematics content.
The launch was graced by Prime Minister and Minister of Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, government officials, education leaders, TikTok representatives and local creators. The program is part of the larger digital transformation policy of education by the government.
“The launch of TikTok’s STEM feed is an important step forward, I’m very hopeful that this initiative will contribute to furthering the education of Sri Lanka’s youth.”
“Education will make the difference between, whether our children are prepared for the world ahead, or we can equip them to realise those dreams,” Prime Minister added.
She also encouraged TikTok to expand its boundaries, and said, “We all recognize the interdisciplinary nature of knowledge.
I would request TikTok to not confine itself to STEM but also think of using this tool for arts and humanities and the intersectionality between these different fields of knowledge.”
The STEM Feed will include a filtered feed of trusted content, with the hashtag of support, the hashtag #STEMTok, displaying content by the Sri Lankan makers and educators. The platform will create curiosity, think critically and increase access to information in local languages.
The representatives of TikTok referred to the initiative as a step in digital empowerment that is safe as it has features such as Family Pairing, Time-Away Scheduling, Teen Network Visibility and Proactive Reporting Alerts that contribute to formation of healthy habits of young users on the internet.
The project is based on the digital transformation of education in Sri Lanka Task Force, which started in June 2025 and has already brought about the digitalization of more than 1,000 schools, training 10,000 teachers and creating digital content in the native language.
The government hopes to have digital infrastructure in every school by 2028 and certify 80 percent of teachers in digital skills, and TikTok STEM Feed is regarded as another tool that can facilitate the same.
Sri Lanka is part of an international trend of digital platforms that incorporate education into social media with this launch. Nonetheless, authorities have stressed that such a partnership is not only a global trend, but also a national decision to leverage the use of technology to empower the youth and establish itself as a digital education powerhouse in
the region.
