Winner – Team 01 of Faculty of Engineering from University of Moratuwa
The third edition of ‘Varsity Battles’, the inter-university capital market quiz competition organised by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) and the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE), was successfully concluded at Heritage Hotel, Anuradhapura recently.
This event saw participation from 29 teams representing 10 state universities, showcasing the intellectual calibre and enthusiasm of Sri Lankan undergraduates. The participants at the final round won their way up through a series of inter-faculty competitions conducted in three clusters, before battling wits as the top performing teams of 10 victorious universities.
The winning team, Team 01 of the Faculty of Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, emerged victorious after an intense series of rounds, securing the championship along with a cash prize of Rs.400,000. The First Runner-Up, Team 02 of the Faculty of Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, received a cash prize of Rs.300,000, while the Second Runner-Up, Team 01 of the Faculty of Medicine from the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, walked away with Rs.200,000.
The contestants were quizzed on a variety of topics, ranging from global markets, general knowledge, Sri Lankan economy and business, current affairs, sports, entertainment as well as their understanding of the capital market.
CSE Chairman Dimuthu Abeyesekera said, “As you are soon to graduate and enter the workforce or set up a business, having a financial plan for the future is paramount and you must ensure that you begin your financial planning process now. Regardless of the career path you choose, financial literacy and capital market engagement will serve you well. If you want a financially secure future, then financial literacy is required.”
