‘Netherlands’ means ‘lower Countries’, because of its flat land and is below sea level. Netherlands is famous for its landscape of tulips and windmills. Its capital city is Amsterdam (official) and Hague (administrative) and is a very densely populated country for its size. Netherlands is the world’s second-largest exporter of food and agricultural products, which is partly due to the fertility of the soil and the mild climate.
Apparel is the major exporting item to the Netherlands which accounted for 32 percent of Sri Lanka’s total exports to the Netherlands in 2013. Other major exporting items to the Netherlands from Sri Lanka are tobacco, tea, fish products, beverages, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, machinery and agricultural products. Sri Lanka’s major importing items from the Netherlands are optical photographic, cinematographic, cocoa and cocoa preparations medicaments, chemical products, beverages, etc. Sri Lanka is a very popular destination for Dutch tourists.
