Udyama J. Kurukularathne has been appointed as a Non-Executive/Independent Director of HDFC Bank, with immediate effect, the bank informed the Colombo Stock Exchange.
The appointment will be subject to receiving the regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, with regard to the “fit and proper” criteria specified in the Banking Act.
Kurukularatne is an entrepreneur who completed his primary education at S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia and went on to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a Major in Finance and a Minor in Economics from the Eastern Connecticut State University, U.S.A.
He founded Granada Suppliers (Pvt.) Ltd in 1994, a company which specialises export and import of food items, and was instrumental in it becoming a recognized food service provider in Sri Lanka and the Republic of Maldives. He later diversified the activities of the company to include international trading in food items and the import of motor vehicles.
The Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in recognition of his services in advancing bilateral trade, recently appointed him as an Honorary Consul General and his acceptance of this appointment is expected shortly following the consent of the External Affairs Ministry of Sri Lanka. A keen advocate of good governance and anti-corruption, he has written several articles to mainstream newspapers in Sri Lanka.
Kurukularatne does not have any interest in the shares of HDFC Bank.
