The apex private sector trade body in the country, the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC), welcomed the constitutional changes proposed under the 19th Amendment and called on the Parliament to unite and pass it into law.
The CCC praised the repealing of the 18th Amendment, setting up the Constitutional Council and Independent Commissions, repealing of urgent bills and imposing the right to information.
“The chamber believes these provisions will help strengthen good governance, law and order, independence of the judiciary and media freedom, all of which are essential elements of a genuine democracy and a society that is committed to equal opportunities for all its citizens,” the statement said.
The CCC also said that the 19th Amendment would improve the business climate in the country and pave the way for greater investment, creating a platform for sustainable growth, greater job opportunities and a higher standard of living for all
Sri Lankans.
“Considering the importance of the constitutional reforms that have been proposed, the Ceylon Chamber calls on all political parties to take advantage of the historic opportunity presented by a multi-party government to strengthen constitutional governance in the country and set aside narrow political considerations and support and pass into law the provisions referred to above.”
