US Congressional delegation meets Sri Lanka Ports Authority management

A staff delegation from the United States Congress’ House Democracy Partnership met with the chairman and management team of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) at its headquarters in Colombo recently. 

The discussions focused on the operations of the Port of Colombo, its top priorities, ongoing initiatives and future challenges. 

The delegation expressed strong interest in understanding the port’s role as a strategic maritime hub in the Indian Ocean. 

Following the meeting, the delegation participated in a guided tour of the Port of Colombo to gain first-hand insights into its facilities and operations.

The US visiting team included, US Embassy Colombo Chargé d’Affaires Jayne Howell, House Democracy Partnership Executive Director Derek Luyten, Majority Staff Lead Chase Babair, Minority Staff Lead Colby Harriman, Committee on Foreign Affairs (Minority) Professional Staff Member Erik Ashida, Lead Military Escort Ryan Schindler, Adam Michelow of US Embassy Colombo and Regional Indo-Pacific Strategy Coordinator Dustin Bickel.

During the meeting, the SLPA management highlighted the strategic importance of the Port of Colombo as South Asia’s leading transshipment hub and outlined the opportunities for collaboration in port modernisation, digitalisation, green port initiatives and human capital development. The two sides also discussed ways to strengthen maritime sector cooperation, knowledge exchange and bilateral engagement between Sri Lanka and the United States.

This visit underscored the continuing commitment of both parties to enhancing mutual understanding and exploring future partnerships in maritime trade and logistics.
