  • In 2023, milestone was reached in July
  • April 01-15 tourist arrivals total 82,531
  • Improved momentum needed to reach 2018 arrival numbers

Sri Lanka crossed the 700,000 tourist arrival milestone within the first 14 weeks of the year, almost half the time frame taken to reach the mark in 2023.

The provisional data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority showed that from January 01 to April 15, the island nation welcomed a total of 718,315 international visitors.

For the first 15 days of April, Sri Lanka saw a total of 82,531 tourists enter the country, which affirms the island nation is maintaining the growth momentum.

The daily arrival average improved to around 5,502 in the month, from below 3000 arrivals a year ago.

Sri Lanka is targeting between 168,539 and 182,724 tourist arrivals for April, which requires a daily average between 5,617 and 6,090, to achieve this target.

The current arrival momentum shows that Sri Lanka may reach the lower bound of the arrival target for the month.

However, the country is on the course to overperform 105,498 arrivals recorded in April last year, if the current arrival trend persists. For the island nation to reach April 2018 tourist arrivals, an improved momentum is required.

India topped the list as the largest tourist traffic generator, accounting for 17 percent of the total arrivals recorded for April so far.

The United Kingdom ranks as the second largest tourist traffic generator, contributing to 11 percent of the tourist arrivals.

With the recent update to travel advisory on Sri Lanka by the UK authorities, Sri Lanka expects a higher number of tourist arrivals from that market.

Russia was the close third, bringing in 10 percent of the total number of international visitors.

Germany, France, Australia and China occupied the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh positions in the rankings. (NF)

Former Sri Lankans who travel with the foreign citizenship considered as tourists. But actually they routinely visit their close one

Holding a Foreign Passport and Not Residing in SL Friday, 19 April 2024 07:30 AM

@Karu - they are no longer residing in SL permanently and are holding a foreign passport. Most spend a substantial amount whilst in SL visiting tourist spots, wellness centres, on food and beverages, hiring private vehicles, shopping for souvenirs / food items for office colleagues, friends and neighbours back home etc. Does the average Sri Lankan’s do all these expensive expenditures within the one or two weeks a tourist stays in SL?

Efficiency Spot Checks Must Be Carried Out Friday, 19 April 2024 10:25 AM

Very correct. Lethargic bunch of fellas taking their sweet time to clear Visa issues. Foreigners whilst at the immigration department are wasting valuable holiday time to sort out their visa application. The top brass should come around often and check things are flowing efficiently and indicate an average waiting time at each section.

More than the numbers what is relevant is the money they spent. Of the 700,000 visitors at least 10-15% or more can be expat Sri Lankans arriving on foreign passports. They spend a negligible amount as they use their money here

Karu, if any Sri Lankan migrates and gets citizenship in another country and then visits Sri Lanka for whatever reason, he is technically considered to be a tourist. So what's the problem? For god's sake, stop nitpicking and seeing the negative side of every bloody thing !! From personal experience, I can assure you that such people spend far ... far more than the average backpacker of people who come in groups.

Who are these tourists who seem to be arriving in the country in large numbers when the country's leading 4 star and 5 star hotels are advertising all their special buffet lunches and dinners etc. in Sinhala and Tamil meant for the local tourists coming home to spend their holiday and hardly any foreign touhomrists to be seen anywhere.. Psobably the foreign tourists don't stay in big hotels anymore. As such the majority of tourists who come to this country are low budget tourists who can be seen on youtube eating cheap food like Vadai kottu Roti etc. at waysde retaurants and street food stalls and travelling by Tuk Tuk trying to save every dollar .With the advent of summer the number of tourists arriving from Western countries and Europe etc. will virtually decrease.

We must also ensure safety of the visitors if we are looking forward to depend upon the tourism industry. Recently there were few separate incidents that involved tourists and shop owners.
