Economynext: Sri Lanka’s power generation rose 8.6 percent from a year earlier to 6,923 GigaWatt hours (millions of units) in the first six months of 2016, faster than the 5.1 percent shown in 2015, official data shows.

State-run Ceylon Electricity Board also bought more power from private producers amid an outage at a coal plant and reduced hydro generation.
In 2016 coal power generation was down 13 percent (356GWh) to 2,294GWh with plant outages and shut down
for repairs.

Hydro generation was also down 11.2 percent (271GWh) to 2,080GWh in the first six months.
The CEB ramped up private power purchases 51 percent (518GWh) to 1,533GWh, to make up the difference.

Non-conventional renewable energy, mainly mini-hydro bought from private players fell 46 percent to 566 GWh.

In June power generation rose 6.5 percent to 1,174GWh, slightly slower than the 8 to 9 percent growth seen in the first few months of
the year.
