SL crosses 1.5mn tourist arrival milestone amid strong August performance

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector has officially crossed a major milestone, welcoming over 1.5 million tourists year-to-date amid a continued surge in August arrivals.

The strong performance keeps the country on track for a record-breaking month, though the ambitious annual target remains a significant challenge.

According to the latest report from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), the island welcomed 146,755 tourists in the first 20 days of August. This represents a nearly 20 percent increase compared to the 122,348 arrivals recorded during the same period in 2024. The achievement pushed the cumulative arrivals for the year to 1,515,043 as of August 20th.

The daily arrival average for August now stands at a robust 7,338 tourists.

Based on this updated average, the full-month forecast is projected to be approximately 227,500 visitors. This figure would comfortably surpass the August 2024 total of 164,609 arrivals and challenge the previous record of 200,359 set in August 2018. The continued high arrivals are largely attributed to the secondary peak season and the successful conclusion of major cultural attractions such as the Kandy Esala Perahera.

India has further expanded its lead as the top source market, accounting for 22.9 percent of all arrivals in August with 33,588 tourists. The United Kingdom remains in second place with 15,726 tourists (10.7 percent).

From January 1st to August 20th, India led as the top source country with 312,710 tourists, followed by the United Kingdom (147,103), the Russian Federation (118,067), Germany (93,963), and China (88,068), highlighting the key markets driving industry’s year-to-date growth.

Despite crossing the 1.5 million milestone, the industry faces an uphill battle to achieve its ambitious target of 3 million tourist arrivals for the year. With just over four months remaining, Sri Lanka needs to attract nearly 1.5 million additional visitors to meet its goal. This requires a sharp acceleration to a daily average of over 11,100 tourists which would be a significant leap from the current strong average of 7,338 this month.

Based on the year-to-date performance, the current trajectory projects total arrivals to reach approximately 2.4 million, indicating a potential shortfall of around 600,000 tourists from the annual target.
