NDB Capital Scholarship Trust of NDB Capital Holdings Limited (NCAP) is different from other scholarship schemes which provide financial support for university students. Whilst granting financial assistance throughout the university studies, the Trust also supports to produce graduates who are more likely to succeed in the workforce and more appropriately skilled for gainful employment through its career counselling, internships, leadership and other training programs.
As part of this initiative, the Trust successfully conducted its annual training sessions for scholarship awardees from local universities on ‘Public Speaking and Communication Skills’ at Colombo City Hotel recently.  This was intended to provide scholars the opportunity to learn more about public speaking, presentation optimization and persuasive speaking; with the ultimate objective of enhancing learning and drive these university students’ skills to the next level.
The facilitator of the full-day training programme was Dhananjaya Hettiarachchi, the Toastmaster World Champion of Public Speaking 2014 who undoubtedly delivered a very interactive, demanding and high impact public speaking training session.
NDB Capital Scholarship Trust Chairman and NCAP CEO Vajira Kulatilaka also addressed the participants and stated, “Public speaking is exceptionally important for all of us. Potential employers increasingly look for the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively from new graduates. I request you to make use of this opportunity to enhance your skills and be able to verbally express yourself in a persuasive and effective manner and achieve more results in your educational and professional career.”
Funded by NCAP, the Trust is one of the largest corporate social responsibility initiatives of the company which is recognized as a prestigious and competitive scholarship amongst the university students. The Trust was established in 2013 with the intention of contributing to the country’s education system by providing assistance to those who deserve it most.
The awardees were selected from diverse backgrounds such as engineering, medicine, law and management studies through a competitive selection process. While grants were primarily based on financial needs, merit factors including academic achievements, leadership qualities, extra-curricular activities and community work were also taken into consideration.
The Trust intends to expand the offering of scholarships to other Sri Lankan universities in the future covering a higher number of students. NCAP is committed to provide financial assistance as well as intellectual guidance to students. The company believes that the investment in the education of country’s younger generation will provide both short and long-term returns towards the country’s social and economic development.
