July earnings at US$ 319mn

Earnings from tourism for July was recorded at US$ 318.5 million on the back of strong arrivals as Sri Lanka gets often featured among the countries and the islands as the best choice for travel in 2025.

The July income from the tourism trade was a roughly 3.0 percent slippage from what Sri Lanka earned from a year ago but marked a jump from US$ 169.5 million generated in June 2025.  In July, Sri Lanka welcomed 200,244 travellers, taking the first seven months tally to 1.37 million.

With July earnings from the trade, Sri Lanka has generated US$ 2,031.1 million in total earnings in the first seven months at 7.8 percent growth over the same period last year.

In 2024, Sri Lanka generated US$ 3,168.6 million in earnings from tourism, up 53.2 percent from 2.1 million arrivals.

Sri Lanka has an ambitious target to attract 3.0 million tourists in 2025 to earn US$ 5.0 billion.

While the targets seem a bit of a tall order seen from the arrivals thus far, the country appears to be able to surpass in 2025 its highest arrivals and earnings recorded back in 2018 before the industry was struck by repeated crises.

At its peakin 2018, Sri Lanka hosted 2.5 million visitors who brought and spent US$ 4.4 billion in earnings.

However, Sri Lanka is getting continuously noticed for its beaches and mostly exclusive diversity offered by its nature, helping the country to close in on the two targets.

Most recently Sri Lanka was recognised as the top most beautiful island in the world among a 50 best islands by the global travel site Big 7 Travel.

According to Big 7 Travel, Sri Lanka clinched the top spot for its rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes and prestige beaches.

Further, Conde Nast Travellers ranked Sri Lanka as the most family-friendly country to visit in 2025.

Meanwhile, TIME Magazine has featured, The Pekoe Trail in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands among the world’s 100 greatest places to visit in 2025.

Adding further to its diverse offerings, Sri Lanka last week opened doors for South Asia’s first fully integrated resort, The City of Dreams which has a top-tier international standard casino, elevating Sri Lanka’s global standing as a regional destination for leisure, entertainment and high-end retail.
