Hemal Lokugeegana assumes duties as new HDFC Bank CEO with other key appointments

Hemal Chaminda Lokugeegana has been appointed as General Manager/CEO of HDFC Bank of Sri Lanka, with effect from August 14, 2025 and officially assumed duties at the bank’s head office.

Lokugeegana is a highly accomplished professional with a distinguished career spanning over 24 years in the banking sector. 

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from the University of Kelaniya and a Master’s Degree in Business Management from the University of Rajarata. He is a fellow member of the Institute of Bankers and a member of the Institute of Management and a Chartered Member of the Institute of Personal Management.

His career at SDB Bank PLC showcases a remarkable trajectory of growth and responsibility. He has served as Head of Business Banking and SME, following a pivotal period as the founding Chief Risk Officer/Deputy General Manager. This was preceded by roles as Assistant General Manager of Human Resources Management and Development, AGM of Training and Regional Head of the Wayamba region, Regional Manager and Senior Manager HR and Administration. 

His extensive experience and proven leadership are expected to bring valuable insights and direction to the bank at this pivotal time.

Until Lokugeegana’s appointment, Deputy General Manager Credit and Recovery Kapila Deshapriya was entrusted by the board of directors to serve in the capacity of cover-up General Manager from end-July 2025. 

In a related development, two new directors have also been appointed to the board.

J.M.P.S. Kaushallya was elected as an Independent, Non-Executive Director of HDFC Bank. He is a Fellow Chartered Accountant and a Fellow Management Accountant of the CMA Sri Lanka. He is also an Associate Member of the Chartered Certified Accountants, UK. He is a Fellow Chartered Accountant and a Fellow Member of the Institute of Certified Management Accountants of Sri Lanka, bringing strong financial and governance expertise. 

Meanwhile, K.K. Gayani Premathilake, Attorney-at-Law, has been appointed as a Non-Independent Non-Executive Director, further strengthening the board’s legal and compliance perspective. She is presently working as Chief Legal officer of the Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry. She holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Colombo, Master of Human Rights from the University of Colombo and Master of Laws from Cardiff Metropolitan University of UK.
