Energy Minister Engineer Kumara Jayakody has chosen Harsha Wickramasinghe, a seasoned mechanical engineer, to lead the sustainable energy programme of the country, appointing him as Director General of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority.

The Sustainable Energy Authority quickly changed the pace of renewable energy development in the country, opening up many opportunities for private sector investments.

Wickramasinghe is credited for laying the regulatory framework for renewable energy development, which was previously mired in controversies, making the sector operations transparent and fair.  He was assigned to lead the energy efficiency programme of the country in 2013, after streamlining the renewable energy sector.

Wickramasinghe joined the government service in 2001, after serving the private sector early in his engineering career. After positioning the Energy Conservation Fund as a prominent player in the energy landscape, he effected transformative changes, elevating it to become the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority in 2007, with a wide mandate to ensure the energy security of Sri Lanka.

A product of Royal College, the University of Moratuwa and University of Colombo, Wickramasinghe has been an active member of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka and a Past President of the Sri Lanka Energy Managers’ Association.
