Chandana Aluthgama resigns as SLIC Group CEO

Sri Lanka Insurance yesterday announced the resignation of its Group Chief Executive Officer Chandana L. Aluthgama, effective (August 1, 2025).

Aluthgama assumed duties as Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation in 2018. His leadership continued with Sri Lanka Insurance Life Ltd, following the segregation on February 1, 2024. 

Over his tenure, he has been instrumental in guiding the organisation through various transformations and achieving significant milestones, serving under five government administrations and collaborating with eight chairmen.

With over 33 years of extensive experience across diverse facets of the insurance industry, Aluthgama began his journey in 1992 at CTC Eagle Insurance Co Ltd. He has held senior positions in renowned organisations such as Eagle Insurance PLC (A member of the Zurich Financial Services Group) and HNB Assurance PLC and prior to joining SLIC he served as Chief Business Officer and Principal Officer of HNB General Insurance Ltd.

In a statement, Aluthgama noted, “Leading Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation and subsequently Sri Lanka Insurance Life Ltd has been one of the key highlights of my career. This journey has been extraordinary and I am honoured to have walked alongside such incredible colleagues.” 

He extended his heartfelt thanks to the chairman and board of directors, employees, customers, shareholders and partners for their trust and support.

“What SLIC has achieved is not the work of one person but the result of a dedicated, talented and passionate team,” he stated. 

He expressed comfort in the knowledge that both Sri Lanka Insurance Life Ltd and Sri Lanka Insurance General Ltd are in strong positions for continued growth and excellence and conveyed his sincere wishes for the organisation’s ongoing success.

Beyond his professional roles, Aluthgama has made valuable contributions to academia as a visiting lecturer at the Postgraduate Unit of the University of Colombo, Management and Finance Faculty, for over two decades. 

He holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Colombo and a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Kelaniya. 

He is a Fellow and Chartered Manager of the Chartered Management Institute of the UK (CMgr, FCMI) and a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance. 

Aluthgama has also presented research papers at local and international conferences and undergone extensive training globally. In addition, he is currently a doctoral candidate focusing on psychology, strategy and technology.

Aluthgama served as Principal Officer for Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Ltd and was the immediate President of the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka. 

Aluthgama has decided to step down to pursue career opportunities that align more closely with his personal aspirations at this stage of his distinguished career.
