CWIT sets new benchmark as Port of Colombo’s 1st triple ISO-certified container terminal

Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT) has reached another defining milestone in its journey to transform Sri Lanka’s maritime sector by becoming the first container terminal at the Port of Colombo to achieve three internationally recognised ISO certifications simultaneously. 

The achievement strengthens CWIT’s position as a benchmark for modern port operations while reaffirming its commitment to delivering world-class services built on quality, sustainability and safety.

The terminal has been awarded certification for ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety), under an Integrated Management System (IMS), demonstrating that its operations meet globally recognised standards across all three critical areas.

The milestone comes within a relatively short period after the commencement of operations, reflecting the strong governance framework and operational discipline established from the outset. 

As Sri Lanka’s first fully automated deep-water container terminal, CWIT has consistently focused on embedding international best practices, creating resilient systems and fostering a culture of accountability that supports long-term operational excellence.

From the beginning of its operational journey, CWIT has prioritised the development of robust management systems designed to ensure consistent service quality, responsible environmental practices and the highest standards of occupational health and safety.

Rather than treating compliance as a regulatory requirement, the terminal has integrated these principles into every aspect of its operations.

The achievement further complements CWIT’s rapid growth trajectory. Within its first year of operations, the terminal became the fastest at the Port of Colombo to handle one million TEUs, while recently strengthening its infrastructure with the arrival of the region’s tallest electric ship-to-shore cranes as part of its phase two expansion. Together, these milestones demonstrate that operational growth and international standards can advance hand in hand.

Colombo West International Terminal (Private) Limited Chief Executive Officer Munish Kanwar said the certifications represent far more than compliance with the international standards.

By embedding quality, sustainability and safety into the foundation of its operations, CWIT continues to align every aspect of the terminal with internationally recognised benchmarks while delivering greater value to the customers, partners and stakeholders.

The triple ISO certification further enhances CWIT’s role in strengthening the Port of Colombo’s global competitiveness. Developed through a partnership between Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited, John Keells Holdings PLC and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, the US $ 800 million terminal continues to invest in advanced automation, electrified equipment and sustainable infrastructure that support efficient cargo handling and reduced environmental impact.

As phase two development progresses, CWIT remains focused on creating a future-ready maritime gateway capable of serving the world’s largest container vessels while delivering faster turnaround times, safer workplaces and environmentally responsible operations.
