Brown & Company PLC, part of Sri Lanka’s LOLC Group, yesterday announced the launch of a new line-up of electric vehicles (EVs), a move that positions itself as a key player in expanding affordable mobility after years of import restrictions left the consumers priced out of the market.
In partnership with Chinese automakers SAIC-GM-Wuling and Beijing Auto Works, Browns said it would introduce three models designed to cater to different segments of Sri Lankan consumers.
Flagship BAW-E7, a compact five-seater, is priced at Rs.4.7 million, making it the lowest-priced EV in the local market. It will be joined by Wuling Binguo at Rs.8.1 million and Wuling Cloud at Rs.12.4 million.
LOLC Chairman Ishara Nanayakkara stated that the launch marked a historic point in Sri Lanka’s mobility landscape and stressed Browns’ legacy of adapting to consumer needs.
“This initiative reflects our belief that true progress comes from empowering people through access, opportunity and innovation,” he said.
Meanwhile, Browns EV Director Niveyn Nanayakkara said the company was responding to the pent-up demand.
“Following years of import restrictions that have deprived our market of vehicle ownership, Sri Lankans have been waiting for vehicles that are not only high in quality but also genuinely financially accessible,” he said.
Browns said the rollout goes beyond vehicle sales, with provisions for flexible financing through LOLC Finance and other banks, insurance coverage via LOLC Insurance and after-sales support under its Browns Care programme. The company is also planning to establish Sri Lanka’s largest EV charging infrastructure network to support long-term adoption.
Wuling, the world’s second-largest EV brand, has produced over three million units globally, while Beijing Auto Works is among China’s oldest and largest automotive manufacturers. Browns said their expertise, coupled with its 150-year legacy in Sri Lanka, ensures quality, safety and value for consumers.
The company added that it plans to expand its presence with showrooms across the island and would gradually introduce higher-end models, making Browns EV “a one-stop destination for electric mobility”.
