Ananda Atukorala appointed NDB Chairman

National Development Bank PLC (NDB) on last Friday announced the appointment of Ananda Atukorala as the bank’s new Chairman, subject to Central Bank approval.


Atukorala’s appointment comes in the wake of the incumbent Chairman Tanky Wickremeratne retiring from the bank with effect from August 31, 2016, before reaching the regulatory cap of 70 years imposed by the Central Bank on bank chairmen. 


On the same day NDB Director/CEO Rajendra Theagarajah also announced his resignation from the bank with effect from November 30, 2016 to pursue “wider interests,” according to a filing by the bank to the Colombo Stock Exchange. 

Theagarajah had served NDB for three years in this capacity. When he joined NDB in 2013, he took on a 5-year assignment. 
Meanwhile, a brief resume of the new Chairman Atukorala submitted to the CSE said he possessed extensive banking experience extending over 35 years, having been with the ANZ Grindlays Banking Group both in Sri Lanka and overseas and having served as Deputy General Manager of ANZ Grindlays Bank, Sri Lanka, Country Manager-Sri Lanka Mashereq Bank PSC, former director of Union Bank  PLC and DFCC Bank PLC.
He was also a former advisor the Ministry of Policy Development and Implementation. 
Presently Atukorala serves as an Independent Non-Executive Director in United Motors Lanka PLC, Orient Finance PLC and Colombo City Holdings PLC.
He also serves as the Independent Non-Executive Deputy Chairman of UB Finance Company Ltd and as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Pragnya Tech Parks Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, TVS Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, Unimo Enterprises Ltd, Arni Holdings & Investments (Pvt) Ltd and Unawatuna Boutique Hotels (Pvt) Ltd. 
Atukorala is also a former Director of the Sri Lanka Banks Association (Guarantee) Ltd and the Credit Information Bureau of 
Sri Lanka.
He holds a BSc from University of Leeds, UK, MTT from North Carolina State University, USA and a MBA.
