The Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT) successfully hosted ECRISA 2026 – Emerging Concepts and Research in Integrated Sustainable Adaptation, a national-level research conference held under the theme ‘Technological Synergies for a Sustainable Sri Lanka’.
The conference was designed to promote interdisciplinary research and innovation aimed at addressing contemporary development challenges in Sri Lanka and the wider region.
ECRISA was conceptualised as a platform that brought together researchers, academics, professionals, policymakers and young innovators from diverse fields, including electronics, communication and information technology, space technology and its applications, automation and astronomy.
From an academic perspective, ECRISA provided a valuable forum for researchers to present original work, exchange ideas and engage in constructive scholarly dialogue.
During the technical sessions, double-blind peer-reviewed research papers were presented to a learned audience, strengthening research quality, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and supporting early-career researchers through expert feedback and national-level exposure.
From a societal perspective, the conference highlighted pathways for translating research outcomes into practical applications, policy insights and technological solutions that deliver direct benefits to society. Many of the presented studies addressed real-world challenges, reinforcing the vital role of research and innovation in national development and sustainable adaptation.
The conference featured two distinguished keynote speakers. Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya enriched ECRISA with compelling perspectives on the evolving digital economy, enabling technological infrastructure, innovation ecosystems and individual responsibility in national development. Dr. Mansoor Lai delivered an insightful address on leveraging earth observation and digital innovation for resilient and sustainable water management. Together, their contributions helped bridge the gap between research, industry and policy, inspiring participants, particularly young researchers to align their work with national priorities.
The presenters to the conference represented a diverse profile, including academics, industry professionals, researchers from public and private sector institutions as well as postgraduate and undergraduate students. This diversity enriched the technical discussions and reflected the collaborative research ecosystem that ECRISA seeks to foster.
For the ACCIMT, ECRISA 2026 delivered significant institutional value. The conference strengthened the ACCIMT’s role as a key statutory body for advanced research, innovation and technology transfer, while enhancing institutional visibility, expanding research networks and creating opportunities for future collaborations with universities, industry and government agencies.
Importantly, ECRISA strongly aligns with the ACCIMT’s mandate and scope of work, as defined under its Act of Parliament. The conference directly supports the ACCIMT’s mission to conduct, promote and coordinate research in modern technologies, foster innovation and contribute to national development through science and technology. By facilitating knowledge exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration, ECRISA reinforces the ACCIMT’s commitment to transforming research outputs into tangible societal and economic benefits. ECRISA 2026 stands as a meaningful step toward building a resilient, innovation-driven research culture in Sri Lanka, while positioning the ACCIMT at the forefront of national efforts in science, technology and sustainable development.
