Two US neurosurgeons visit Duminda

Two US neurosurgeons based in Singapore have visited and checked on the situation of parliamentarian Duminda Silva during the weekend who is currently receiving treatment at the Sri Jayawardenapura General Hospital following the Mulleriyawa gun battle where he sustained serious head injuries, highly placed hospital sources said.

The two specialists have been brought down to the country by the family of the parliamentarian. According to unconfirmed sources, it is likely that the MP will be taken to Singapore after an assessment by the two specialists.

According to the Sri Jayawardenapura General Hospital Director Dr. Shavendra Gamage, the parliamentarian is recovering slowly and is responding to deep commands as well. He was removed from the life support system several days ago.

“We have seen many soldiers with bullets in their skull than anyone. So with that we have gathered the experience and know-how in treating such causalities with serious head injuries,” he said.

“I also have to say that we did not have the equipment for brain surgery and we rented them by paying high prices. Two weeks before MP Silva was admitted we purchased this equipment,” he noted.

“We are happy as he is stable and satisfied as we have been providing him with all necessary treatment,” he added.

“The ventilator is kept close to him in case of an emergency,” he added. The parliamentarian was put on a ventilator following the four and half hour surgery which was conducted on October 08. However one bullet remains in his skull.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Maheshi Wijeratne and her team are visiting him throughout as a part of the process in ascertaining his situation and his improvement.

Security in and around the Sri Jayawardenapura General Hospital has been tight since MP Silva was admitted following the Mulleriyawa shooting incident. (Supun Dias)
