The OIC of the Welikada Police has been transferred to the Police Field Headquarters over the death of a 42-year-old woman who was a domestic worker at popular tele drama producer and business personality Sudharma Nethicumara's house, and was taken into custody over an alleged theft.
The domestic worker was taken into custody on May 11 following a complaint by Sudharma Nethicumara that a gold ring had been stolen by the maid from her residence. However, the female helper, a resident of Badulla, was admitted to the National Hospital in Colombo from police custody after she had complained of breathing difficulties.
Police said the woman had died the following day while undergoing treatment. However, the IGP ordered the Police Special Investigation Unit to conduct an investigation into the incident due to suspicions raised by her relatives and other parties.
Accordingly, earlier a Sub Inspector, two Police Sergeants and a Police Constable attached to the Welikada Police were also interdicted while another Police Constable and two Women Police Constables had been transferred after investigations revealed that the officers had committed acts of indiscipline in the Police Disciplinary Code.
The OIC was transferred after the IGP had recommended the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security to transfer him.

First send all Policemen for an orientation on Human Values which can be conducted by Priests from all religious faiths. This must be an important agenda in the induction programme for new recruits to the Police and Armed Forces. At the end of the day, we are all human beings and due to different circumstances in life, we do right and wrong things. This does not mean we condone wrong things, but there should be a professional and civilised approach in dealing with a person once in Police custody.

Very frankly and very honestly, why does it take the legal machinery to respond to a gross human rights violation such as this? Is it because the victim happens to be from a very poor rural background whereas the complainant is from an affluent family? Where, or where are the so called Women's Organizations who are supposed to fight for the rights of underprivileged women? Is a transfer a fitting punishment for such a horrendous miscarriage of justice? One country, one law, please provide me the answers.

So, this settles the matter? An investigation was initiated, and eventually, as we all know, there will be no outcome. No accountability or punishment? For how long can we ensure this system in our country? So pathetic.

A mere transfer is not a solution to the incident-related act, the culprits took the life of a woman working at the residence of Tele Drama artiste' and should be sent to GALLOW. It clearly proves police brutality.

We must be the only stupid country in the world who think that transferring to another location with the same job title and perks is punishment for corrupt and incompetent police officers. Nothing will change and this vicious cycle will continue always.

Did the Police do a favor to Sudharma by trying to take such a valuable ring out of her stomach? This domestic workers are poor, frustrated and not educated. That does not mean that they are supposed to steel but they can get tempted. There are so many ways that you can take precautions against theft. Can this owner of the ring sleep peacefully in the night now ? If this happened in a developed country the owner also will be charged for not taking proper measures to safeguard their so valuable Jewellery. What a valuable life , a daughter, wife, mother and to die like this ????
