Ahead of the vote on the latest resolution at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC ),Sri Lanka is only confident of six countries voting along with it against the move, Daily Mirror learns .
The resolution is co-sponsored by the United States, Canada ,Germany, the United Kingdom ,Malawi, Montenegro and North Macedonia .
A foreign ministry source said Sri Lanka could not keep unnecessary hopes that it could overcome the adoption of the new resolution which , among others , calls for the strengthening of the evidence gathering mechanism on alleged human rights violations and accountability issues in Sri Lanka .
The Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has set up this mechanism in keeping with the resolution 46/1. The new resolution asks for more resources to be allocated to proceed with its work.
The ministry source said Sri Lanka would not be able to muster sufficient number of votes from the 47 member council to prevent the resolution from being adopted .
The countries such as Bangladesh and Russia which traditionally vote with Sri Lanka are not members this time . India is also likely to abstain from voting . Nepal will also abstain since it is under pressure to do so from a regional power .
Most of the middle eastern countries,which are traditionally with Sri Lanka,will also abstain .
“The movers of the resolution will be able to get enough votes to adopt the resolution. We are awake to the reality ,” the source said .
The resolution will be put to vote on October 6 or 7. Foreign Minister Ali Sabry was to fly to Geneva last night to present Sri Lanka’s case .(Kelum Bandara)

Sooner Sri Lanka politician and government fall on their swords for their folly the better. Too many decades they have trampled on the freedoms of citizens. Until they are forced to Sri Lanka government using military and police will continue to commit atrocities. Who in parliament wants to bring about new constitutional amendment to bring about freedom of expression ahead of all other laws?

Yes indeed we need to getting rid of crooks and cronies running the country fairly treated the ethnic minorities. Let them come forward to the top . Getting rid of the unelected president who loves master debate in front of the speaker.

For the sake of protecting just 50 war criminals, the whole armed forces of Sri Lanka was tarnished internationally by Rajapakse's. If we had jailed those 50 war criminals at the very start, today reconciliation would have happened in North, better relations with our neighbours, developed the nation positively (without hawkish agendas of Rajapakse's) and kept the discipline and reputation of armed forces.

The world must teach srilankans governments what is human rights. Just because it is embodied in the constitution in reality all successive govts have violated this and all three communities are undergoing various problems in this country. Only name sake it is a democratic country but one dictator commit many crimes.

Sri is not above the world accepted human rights laws. If they think that they can get away with murder they are mistaken. S L government is trying paint a rosy picture at the UNHR commission , they know exactly what is happening in SL. Ranil Rajapaksa this is your Waterloo.

India is probably who pressured Nepal to refrain from voting. We must never bow to Indian demands. Even if that dictatorial country were to invade our country, and even if they split our country into four, separate nations, eventually a new Sri Lanka will form again. Just like the Taliban trounced all efforts of all the invading nations to keep them down for the last three decades, we too must never be bowed. Down with India!

We are good at shifting the blame to others. Ranil or Sabri are just voices to protect past rulers, who was maharajano! We defeated a ruthless group who were very well supported by a mighty India, but the rulers did not have the magnanimity to allow the defeated to start a normal life. Instead they thrived on division, to the extent, they murdered over 250 innocent, pious, elderly to consolidate their grip on power. Do we think that the world is blind to this cruel crime? Perpetrators of all crimes are not in their seats now, but are bidding their time, until the path is made smooth for their re-entry. This is the simple truth. Ask Ranil if you don't agree!

To make a long story short. UK and USA wanted to punish Sri Lanka for ending the war. Both UK and USA wanted the war to continue for geo-political reasons. It was the same game they played in the case of Iraq and Libya. Th however, our corrupt and pig headed rulers did not foresee what was in store for the country. They did not punish the few criminals in the armed forces when there was clear evidence of their involvement in certain criminal activities. As a result the entire armed forces ' image was tarnished. No proper counter measures were taken to combat the Tamil diaspora propaganda activities. They have alleged the SLG of genocide, a shameful and blatant lie. But the SLG is deaf and blind. So pathetic!!
