The Treasury should state whether it is possible to allocate the ten billion rupees needed for local government elections, UNP's Navin Dissanayake said today.

“I also believe that franchise is a right of the people, but the Treasury should make a statement as to whether the nation can afford an election,” Dissanayake said at a media briefing.

“I don’t mind allying with the Pohotuwa but the UNP should also be fairly represented in such an alliance. UNPers should be appointed as district leaders in areas such as Nuwara Eliya if the two parties contest together at a future election,” he added.

“I also personally believe that President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa should have a dialogue and iron out differences. This could help SJBers rejoin their mother party,” he said while stressing that both SLPP and UNP have their respective block votes.

“When one listens to the way SJB Chairman Sarath Fonseka speaks about SJB leader Premadasa one is able to determine the internal issues of SJB,” he also said.(Yohan Perera)

Can the treasury also state if we can afford 225 mps, their perks and writing off billions in commission? So terrified of an election!

    johan Tuesday, 20 December 2022 07:09 PM

As long as Ranil is the leader SJB will not join the defeated UNP.Almost one decade he could not win any election.Mahinda was keeping Ranil under his boots and not allowing him to raise his head.

if treasury only knows the answer to whether the country cannot raise 20 billion rupees, then one wonders what our leaders are worth.

    Chux Tuesday, 20 December 2022 08:04 PM

Elections are sole rights of the people not the treasury first you look at budget allocations done for so many unnecessary projects

    Cineha Tuesday, 20 December 2022 08:40 PM

Well....the treasury should also state whether they could afford further appointment of ministers.

    Ben Tuesday, 20 December 2022 09:10 PM

We are closely watching whether you pay the electricity bill sooner,if cannot pay the bill do not on lights, people know well accelerated Mahawali brought fortune to your father, and do not expect public to pay your bills

If no election what is the alternative? A person and a party/government which does not have the mandate of the people to continue ruling?

    Anthony. R Tuesday, 20 December 2022 10:24 PM

Look who's Talking, a politically Discarded Traitor. Can the treasury afford the 225 in the parliament.? Scared of elections? Stay home ,where the people have put you, and your party

    GHT Tuesday, 20 December 2022 10:29 PM

SLPP is a people's party, which never needs any alliance with the DEAD UNP which is holding ZERO seat in the PARLIAMENT, no doubt, same will reflect in the future Local Government Elections too. SLPP's victory will be inevitable in the LG polls.

Hold all elections on the same time like in US. No need to hold separate elections for president, parliament and local. They can all go on one ballot

    Don Wednesday, 21 December 2022 04:10 AM

Navin Could you please shut up? If a National election is held, migrated Sri Lankans will fund it to chase you guys away from political arena. Any country will fund it, if the elected party promises to reduce MP numbers to 100 and Ministers to 20. That will compensate the expenditure within a short time.

    Sunil Wednesday, 21 December 2022 08:21 AM

One of the most stupid statements made by a politician since independence. We have a finance minister and it is his duty to ensure that funds are available to hold elections on schedule. I would also like to remind this guy that at any election to be held the UNP and pohottuwa combined will suffer a defeat much more ignominious than the previous general elections.

If you don't have the money just print it

    Man Wednesday, 21 December 2022 10:13 AM

If wastage avoided and the looted funds recovered, there won't be any issue. Demurrage charges are a major concern. No money printing please. SLPP could win like Wayamba election, under Chandrika, in 1996 as they got that ability, quite well.

Reduce the number of MPs to 100 . Go for General Election and Presidential Ekection. Those are the changes people need. At present the Government is playing a trick. They will hold the Lcal Government Ekections first and say no money in the Treasury to hold Presidential and General Elections.

    dinesh Wednesday, 21 December 2022 04:28 PM

does the ten billion rupees mentioned by ND include the vote buying and kick back expenses ?? otherwise this seems a bloated estimate

    Advisor Thursday, 22 December 2022 12:33 AM

All elections should be carried out on the same day. This is very fare, less expenses and tensions within the people will be released on the ballot paper. The country will settle down. Gradually bring down the number of MPs and ministers.

Paragon of virtue Thursday, 22 December 2022 04:27 AM

Hey Naveen, before you open your mouth , can you please settle the enormous electricity bill arrears? Stop acting like an entitled idiot. At least can't your father in law Karu who acts like a paragon of honesty advice you to settle the bill when people are suffering? Your father stashed away enough money in foreign banks for the 3 of you and you can use a pittance of that to settle the bill. Also remember you have no future in politics. I think Gamini's Karma is chasing the siblings ...all good for nothing idiots!

    Karu Monday, 26 December 2022 07:12 AM

Naveen, Surely, don't you know how much an election costs even approximately - having being an MP for such a long time? 10 - 15 Billion is affordable for this top heavy Govt with an expenditure of 7000 Billion per year. No point trying to beat the dead UNP horse to life finding excuses to avoid elections.
