The quarantine curfew which has been declared for ten days, should be extended by at least ten more days to successfully curtail the spike in Covid-19 cases and deaths caused due to complications, former Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe said today.
He told a news conference convened by the National People's Power (NPP) that an extension of the travel restriction would help to curtail the infections, mortality, congestion in hospitals and health workers getting infected with the virus.
He said all the medical experts and specialists opine that travel restrictions should therefore be in force for ten more days.
Dr. Abeysinghe said vaccination was not the only solution for Covid-19 but it is the best solution against the virus.
“The vaccination is not the only solution against the Covid pandemic. For instance, in Israel, more than 78% of its population over 12 years of age have been vaccinated. However, there is an increase in Covid cases and mortality due to the spread of Delta variant. So, we need to continue adhering to health practices such as maintaining one-metre distance, washing hands and wearing face masks,” he said.(Ajith Siriwardana)

Why is the government only talking about vaccination as the only solution to Covid-19? Clearly the experts are saying otherwise. The government should publicly promote health guidelines such as social distancing, washing hands and wearing of proper face masks. They should enforce it at retail shops and other establishments open to customers. I have observed some of the shops have become pretty slack at implementing these health measures.

more lockdown will bring death through starvation to millions which depending on daily work. No government servant, no politician, no health expert having this kind of problems as their salaries are paid. A gardener from the neighbourhood already cried when the lockdown was announced on friday as he has no money to buy even goods. There are many aspects to be considered and I don't know if the president meant with sacrifices that these people die of starvation. The 2000 Rs. for a month, which are promised, no one will ever get, will not solve the problem.

Make mandatory for all, I still see people visiting friends, going up n down, no problem, while we are meant to stay Indoors .

Agree with the above. Lockdowns dont deal with the biggest problem which is people nipping around there neighbours and close by relatives for unmasked gossip time. I would guess this is where 90% of spread happens and people still do this if not do this more during lockdowns here in lka.

At least introduce the odd/even ID numbers game.

lot of people are shunning the chinese vaccines and waiting for other vaccines. Therefore, there are still plenty who have not taken the vaccine. The Govt should crackdown on these people
